OpenDaylight (ODL), the world’s largest open source SDN platform, delivers interoperable, easily customized networks to service providers, enterprises, universities and a variety of organizations around the globe.

Software-Defined Networking (SDN) has emerged as a foundational technique for building a dynamic networking architecture to address cloud and NFV networking demands.  As the core of an emerging open, modular networking stack, the OpenDaylight platform exposes open APIs to a diverse set of applications, multivendor support for a range of networking devices, and network programmability enabling intelligent control and management of the network.

Operational View of OpenDaylight DiagramOpenDaylight is an important upstream community and key component of the OPNFV platform as an SDN controller option. OpenDaylight was selected for OPNFV because it is a vendor-neutral, open platform and contains:

  • A completely modular architecture enabling network architects to design and manage exactly the networks they need, at any scale
  • Robust support for common toolchains, such as network virtualization and service function chaining
  • Policy-based management via model-driven support for a range of existing devices and technologies
  • Open APIs to multiple orchestration systems and networking applications

Both OPNFV and OpenDaylight are Linux Foundation collaborative projects and work closely together on many levels. For instance, the OPNFV community contributes developers and code to accelerate ODL features. These “upstream” contributions take the form of patches and blueprints that are reviewed and discussed by the community and accepted into the ODL codebase. ODL delivers early releases into OPNFV’s installer projects and continuous integration (CI) toolchain.

The many benefits to the ecosystem from this collaboration include:

  • A leading, tested SDN platform, with a strong commercial ecosystem, within the OPNFV platform
  • A fully tested reference architecture for cloud and NFV, which unlocks the full potential of the open SDN platform
  • A focused community working to develop community engagement practices, identify community leaders, and manage community contributions

A better way for network operators to manage and automate their networks, especially across heterogeneous network hardware

The benefits to the ecosystem from this collaboration are many and result in:

  • A leading SDN controller in the OPNFV platform
  • Additional ODL features and fewer bugs
  • A focused community working to develop community engagement practices, identify community leaders, and manage community contributions
  • A better way for network operators to manage and automate their networks, especially across multiple vendor hardware.

Both OPNFV and ODL also work closely with OpenStack, which provides the orchestration for ODL’s Cloud and NFV applications, such as service function chaining (SFC), VPNs at Layers 2 and 3, and Virtual Customer Premises Equipment (vCPE).
